Sketches / Work-In-Progress

This is where I'll post progress sets for pieces I'm working on, as well as sketches that don't get turned into polished artwork. For finished pieces, see my Finished Artwork gallery page.

Queen Padme Amidala

I drew this over the course of several days, using graphite and a bit of colored pencil. It started out as what was going to just be a rough sketch for my Draw Every Day 2016 project, but I ended up putting more detail into it than I'd planned when I started. I didn't notice that the eyes weren't quite lined up correctly until it was too late to fix it, which I'll just take as a lesson learned: Even if you think your sketch is lined up correctly, quadruple check before you start drawing dark lines!

Daisy Ridley as Rey

Some quick sketches I drew of Daisy Ridley as Rey from the Force Awakens trailers, in an attempt to re-teach myself how to draw real people again. They're a bit rough, but I feel like I made some progress and learned some things while drawing these, and that's the important thing.

And here's another pencil drawing I created of Daisy Ridley, from a photo reference.

Assault Android Peanut

I drew another assault android from Assault Android Cactus: Peanut.

No scanned version this time, because my scanner was blowing out the lighter colors too much, so you just get photos taken with my phone. I bought some fancy new artist pens (Amazon link), and they're way better than drawing with a Sharpie. Having different size tips for doing bold lines and fine details is really nice, and the pens put down really dark ink that doesn't smudge or bleed through the paper, even in spots where I put down a lot of ink, like around the eyes and midsection. The colors are colored pencil.

I noticed when it was too late to change it that the hand holding the drill is facing the wrong way. Whoops, oh well. Who knows how an android's wrists work, anyway.

Assault Android Cactus

I drew a Cactus (from Assault Android Cactus, one of my favorite games to come out this year).

I started the sketch with a pencil, and in recognition of Inktober, I did the line work with a fine point Sharpie, then finished off the coloring with colored pencils. I used the character select screen in the game as a reference. I took the in-progress shots with my phone camera, then after I was finished I remembered I have a scanner.

I'm not quite as psyched with how this turned out as I am with my Inkling drawing, probably because this was done on paper where I couldn't keep hitting undo over and over to fix every little mistake, but this is probably more representative of where my actual drawing ability is at right now. I definitely need to work on my confidence in my line art, because drawing with a marker on real paper where I can't hit the undo key if I make a mistake made me incredibly nervous.

Inkling amiibo

Here's the progression from initial sketch to completed image for my Inkling drawing, which used the Inkling amiibo as a reference.

When I decided I wanted to draw this, I hadn't sat down to draw something in, honestly, I don't even remember, it's been so long. I've never been very confident in my ability to do line art, which I think shows in the first attempt I made at doing the line art for this drawing. It looked messy and inconsistent, and I wasn't happy with how it was turning out, so I scrapped it and started over. I decided I wanted to teach myself to draw smooth, confident line art, so I made myself start drawing quick, flowing lines. What you can't see here are the thousand or so times I hit undo and re-drew lines until they came out right, but by the time I was finished, I was doing that a lot less. This was a real learning experience for me, and I feel like I've grown a lot as an artist just from this one drawing.

I included the picture with the color layer without the line art, because I thought it looked very Splatoony, like someone drew an Inkling by splattering paint on the page.
